GEO vs SEO: the short answer
SEO helps your pages rank in search results. GEO, or generative engine optimization, helps your business get named or cited inside answers written by AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. They share most of the same groundwork, because AI tools search the web before they answer. GEO adds a few extra checks on top.
So the GEO vs SEO question is less "which one?" and more "in what order?" Google's own 2026 guide to generative AI search answers it directly: SEO best practices "continue to be relevant" because Google's AI features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems."
What does SEO do?
SEO, search engine optimization, is the work of getting your website and Google Business Profile to show up when people search for what you sell. For a local business, that means the Google map pack and the regular results under it.
SEO covers three areas: making your site easy for Google to crawl and index, writing pages that match what customers search, and building trust through reviews, links and accurate listings. If you want the basics first, read what local SEO is.
What does GEO do?
GEO is the work of getting your business named or linked inside an AI-written answer. When someone asks Perplexity "Which HVAC company in Phoenix is good for older homes?", the reply is a paragraph, not a list of ten links. GEO is about being in that paragraph.
The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, later accepted to KDD 2024. Their tests found that adding quotes, statistics and named sources to a page raised its visibility in AI answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing did worse than leaving the page alone. More on that in what GEO is.
How do GEO and SEO compare side by side?
GEO and SEO aim at different screens but pull from the same signals. Here is how they line up for a local business.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you show up | Google map pack and blue links | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| What counts as a win | Ranking high for a search | Being named or linked in the AI answer |
| How many spots exist | Three map pack spots plus a page of links | Often only a few businesses named |
| Main crawler to allow | Googlebot | Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, calls | Mentions across a fixed set of questions, plus calls |
| How stable results are | Fairly steady day to day | Can change by person, place and day |
Where do GEO and SEO overlap?
GEO and SEO overlap on almost everything that matters. Each AI tool depends on search in its own way:
- Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT search rewrites a question into targeted searches and may send them to third-party search providers.
- Perplexity says its crawler, PerplexityBot, is what surfaces and links websites in its answers.
That means the basics pay twice. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent business details, steady reviews and clear pages help you rank in the map pack and give AI tools something solid to quote.
Where do GEO and SEO really differ?
GEO and SEO differ in four practical ways: crawlers, competition for space, outside reputation and measurement.
- Crawlers. SEO mainly needs Googlebot. GEO also needs OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and PerplexityBot for Perplexity. OpenAI's GPTBot is a separate crawler for model training. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, but blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
- Space. A search results page has room for many businesses. An AI answer often names only a handful, so being in the answer at all is what counts.
- Outside reputation. Google notes that its AI features can show what is being said about products and services across the web, including blogs, videos and forum discussions. What others say about you can shape how an AI summary describes you.
- Measurement. A ranking is a number you can check. An AI answer changes with the person, the location and the day. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use approximate location and saved memories when it rewrites a search. One screenshot proves little, so track a fixed set of questions over months.
Should a local business work on GEO or SEO first?
Work on SEO first, then add the GEO checks. Our view is simple: AI tools cannot name a business they cannot find, so GEO work on top of weak SEO rarely shows up anywhere.
For example, a family-run HVAC company in Phoenix might work through it in this order:
- Confirm the website is indexed in Google and that the main pages show in search.
- Fill out the Google Business Profile completely, with the right categories and service area.
- Match the business name, phone and service area on every listing.
- Ask every happy customer for a review, every week, not once a year.
- Rewrite service pages so the first sentence under each heading answers the question.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and check the firewall does not block them.
- Pick ten questions customers ask and check monthly which businesses AI tools name.
Only the last two steps are GEO-only. Everything else is local SEO done properly.
What GEO vs SEO mistakes should you avoid?
The biggest mistake is treating GEO as a separate product that can skip SEO. Watch for these too:
- Keyword stuffing for AI. The GEO researchers found it did worse than doing nothing.
- Buying fake mentions or reviews. Google's guide says chasing inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it seems, because its spam systems are built to catch them.
- Blocking all AI bots with one rule and accidentally blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot.
- Paying for an llms.txt file as a ranking fix. Google says Google Search does not use it.
- Judging success from one AI answer on your own phone.
