What Is SEO?

By Hitesh Lamba · Updated

The short answer

SEO, short for search engine optimization, is the work of helping Google understand your website and your business so you show up when people search for what you sell. For a local business, SEO covers your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the other websites that mention you.

  • Show up when nearby customers search for your service
  • Earn calls from Google without paying for each click
  • Know which parts of SEO actually move the phone

What is SEO, in plain English?

SEO, short for search engine optimization, is the work of helping Google understand your website and your business so you show up when people search for what you sell. For a local business, SEO covers four things: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the other websites that mention you.

Google's own SEO Starter Guide puts it in similar terms. SEO is about helping search engines understand your content and helping people find your site and decide to visit it. Nothing in that definition is magic. It is mostly clear pages, accurate information and a good reputation, kept up over time.

Here is what that looks like in real life. Say a homeowner in Plano types "roof leak repair" into Google at 7 p.m. (an example, not a client). Google has to decide which roofers to show. SEO is everything you do so your roofing company is one of them, and so the person taps "Call" on yours.

Where does SEO show up for a local business?

SEO shows up in three places on a typical local search. Each one can send you calls, and each one runs on slightly different signals.

Where you show up What it looks like What it mostly depends on
The map pack The map and three business listings near the top Your Google Business Profile, distance, reviews, how well known you are
Regular results The blue links under the map Your website pages, links from other sites, technical health
AI answers Google AI Overviews and chat tools that name businesses The same pages Google already indexes, plus how often your business is mentioned

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you cannot pay for a better local ranking. For AI Overviews, Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. There is no special code or file to add. So a business that does the basics well is in the running for all three.

How does SEO work behind the scenes?

SEO works because Google runs in three stages: it crawls the web to find pages, indexes them to understand what each one is about, then serves the best matches when someone searches. Your job is to make each stage easy.

Google says it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or to rank it higher. That is good news for a small shop. A plumber with a clear website and steady reviews can outrank a bigger company that ignores the basics. For the full picture, read our guide on how SEO works, step by step.

What are the main types of SEO?

SEO splits into four areas. They overlap, and a local business needs a little of each.

Type of SEO What it covers Local example
On-page SEO The words, titles and headings on each page A dentist gives "teeth whitening" its own page instead of one line on the home page
Off-page SEO Links, mentions and reviews on other sites A landscaper gets listed on the local chamber of commerce website
Technical SEO Speed, mobile layout, indexing, site structure An HVAC company fixes a setting that was hiding its site from Google
Local SEO Google Business Profile, map results, service areas An electrician lists every town it serves and picks the right business categories

If you want the details, we break down on-page vs off-page SEO and what technical SEO means in separate guides.

SEO vs paid ads: what is the difference?

SEO earns your spot. Ads rent it. Both can bring calls, but they behave very differently over time.

SEO Google Ads Local Services Ads
How you pay Your time or an agency, not per click You pay per click You pay per lead
How fast it starts Weeks to months Days Once Google approves your account
What happens when you stop Rankings fade slowly Calls stop that day Calls stop that day
Shown as an ad? No Yes Yes

Many owners run ads while SEO builds, then lean less on ads once organic calls are steady. That is a reasonable plan. The mistake is treating ads as a replacement for SEO, because every ad call stops the day the budget does.

What SEO is not

SEO is not a trick, and anyone selling it as one is a warning sign. Google's SEO Starter Guide says plainly that there are no secrets that will automatically rank your site first.

A few myths cost local owners real money:

  • Keywords in a hidden tag. Google says it does not use the keywords meta tag at all.
  • Longer is always better. Google says content length alone does not matter for ranking.
  • Repeating your city 40 times. Google's spam policies name blocks of city names and repeated phrases as keyword stuffing.
  • A promise of the top spot. Google's own advice on hiring help says no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google.

SEO is also not just rankings. A page can rank and still not ring the phone. If the page is slow, confusing or has no clear call button, the searcher goes back and calls the next company.

How do you start with SEO this month?

You can start SEO this month without hiring anyone. These six steps cover most of what moves the needle for a local business.

  1. Check that Google can find you. Search site:yourdomain.com in Google. If pages show up, you are in the index.
  2. Set up Google Search Console. It is free, and it tells you which searches show your site and whether Google hit any errors.
  3. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Pick the most accurate categories, add your hours, services and service area, and add real photos.
  4. Give each main service its own page. A plumber should have separate pages for drain cleaning, water heaters and leak repair, each in plain words a customer would use.
  5. Ask every happy customer for a Google review. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses.
  6. Track the calls, not just the rankings. Count calls and form fills from search each month so you know whether SEO is paying off.

How long does SEO take to work?

SEO takes weeks to months, not days. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped.

For a local business, small fixes to a Google Business Profile can show up quickly. Ranking a new service page in a competitive city usually takes longer. Be wary of anyone who promises page one by next week.

Questions owners ask us

What does SEO stand for?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It means improving your website and your online presence so search engines like Google can find your pages, understand them and show them to the right people. For a local business, the right people are customers near you who are searching for the service you sell, often from a phone.

Is SEO free?

Clicks from Google's regular results and map results are free. You do not pay Google when someone finds you that way, and Google says it does not accept payment to rank a site higher. The work itself takes time, whether you do it yourself or hire help: writing service pages, fixing your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews and keeping the site healthy.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, many owners handle the basics. You can claim your Google Business Profile, write a clear page for each service, ask every happy customer for a review and set up Google Search Console. Help pays off when the market is competitive, the website has technical problems, or you simply do not have the hours to keep at it every month.

Is SEO still worth it now that Google shows AI answers?

Yes. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews, and that no special optimization is needed beyond normal SEO. So the same work that earns a spot in regular results also makes your pages candidates for AI answers. A business Google cannot find is invisible in both.

What is the difference between SEO and local SEO?

SEO is the whole practice of getting found in search. Local SEO is the part aimed at searches with a place attached, such as dentist near me or plumber in Mesa, and at the map results that show for them. Local SEO leans harder on your Google Business Profile, reviews and service-area pages.
