Local SEO and Google Business Profile

What Are Google Local Services Ads?

By Hitesh Lamba · Updated

The short answer

Google Local Services Ads are ads for local service businesses that appear prominently in Google Search and let customers call, message or book you directly. You pay per lead, not per click. Your business must pass Google's screening first, and verified advertisers now get one Google Verified badge, which replaced the older Google Screened and Google Guaranteed badges.

  • Understand exactly which calls and messages you pay for
  • Know what Google checks before your ad can run
  • Answer fast, because missed calls can cost you and hurt your ranking

What are Google Local Services Ads?

Google Local Services Ads are ads for local service businesses that appear prominently in Google Search and let customers call, message or book you straight from the ad. You pay for leads, not clicks. Before your ad can run, Google screens and verifies your business, and verified advertisers now carry a single Google Verified badge.

You have probably seen them: a short row of businesses near the top of the results, each with a star rating, review count, hours and a badge. For plumbers, roofers, lawyers and many other trades, Google Local Services Ads can be one of the first things a customer sees.

Google's help pages describe the ad as your business profile inside an ad. It shows your business name, a phone number, your city, your average star rating and review count, your hours, your badge, photos and a short bio.

How do Local Services Ads work?

Local Services Ads work by matching your verified business to searches for your services in the areas you choose, then sending the customer's call, message or booking straight to you. Here is the flow, from both sides.

  1. You sign up and pick your services and areas. Only certain business categories are eligible, and some categories are limited to certain states.
  2. Google screens and verifies your business. Licenses, insurance and, for some categories, background checks. Google says this takes 3 to 4 weeks on average after you submit documents.
  3. You set an average weekly budget. Google treats it as an average, so one week can run higher, but monthly spending is capped.
  4. A customer searches, for example "water heater repair near me", and sees your ad.
  5. The customer calls, messages or books from the ad. Google emails you about the new lead.
  6. You answer and win the job, or you do not. The lead is yours to convert. Google's help page warns that if you regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, your ad ranking may be affected.

How does pay per lead work?

Pay per lead means Google charges you when a customer contacts you through your ad about a service you offer, not when someone clicks or views the ad. Google's help page on how leads work spells out what counts.

Charged as a lead Not charged
A call you answer, or call back and speak with the customer Leads Google judges invalid or low quality at first contact
A missed call where the customer stays on the line more than 20 seconds A follow-up from the same customer within 15 days
A message (text or email) sent through the ad A call that ends before a key press in an automated phone menu
A booking request, in the US and Canada

Read the second row of that table twice. A missed call can still be a charged lead. If your phone goes to voicemail at 7 p.m. and the customer waits on the line past 20 seconds, you can pay for that lead and still lose the job to the next company.

How much each lead costs depends on your category, your area and your bid, which Google describes as the most you are willing to pay for a lead. Google also says charged leads are reassessed over time and may be credited automatically if they turn out to be low quality.

What are the Google Screened and Google Guaranteed badges?

Google Screened and Google Guaranteed were the two main trust badges on Local Services Ads until late 2025. Both told customers the business had passed Google's checks. Google has since replaced them with a single Google Verified badge.

  • Google Guaranteed appeared on home service ads, such as plumbers, electricians and HVAC companies. It was tied to Google's Money Back Guarantee, which let eligible customers ask Google for reimbursement on jobs booked through the ad.
  • Google Screened appeared on professional service ads, such as law firms, financial planners and real estate agents. It meant the business had passed Google's screening, with no money-back program attached.
  • Google Verified is the current badge. Google's help page says it is simplifying its badging with a single badge for all advertisers, that eligible existing advertisers received it automatically, and that ad ranking is not affected by the change.

Google also discontinued the Money Back Guarantee. Its help page says reimbursement requests were accepted for services booked through Local Services Ads before December 7, 2025. If you see an old guide promising a Google guarantee on your jobs, it is out of date.

What does Google check before your ad can run?

Google checks that your business is real, licensed and insured before your Local Services Ad can run. Its US screening requirements page lists these checks, which vary by category and location:

  • Identity checks for the business owner and, in some categories, field workers
  • Background checks on the business and owner, for select categories
  • Business registration checks
  • Insurance, such as general liability and professional liability
  • State-level business and owner licenses
  • A public, verified Google Business Profile

The last item matters more than it looks. Your Local Services Ad leans on the same business identity and reviews as your profile, so a messy or suspended Google Business Profile slows everything down. Our guide to what a Google Business Profile is covers the basics.

Local Services Ads vs Google Ads vs Google Maps

Local Services Ads, regular Google Ads and the free Google Maps results are three different things. Many local businesses use more than one.

Local Services Ads Google Ads (search ads) Google Maps results
You pay Per lead Per click Nothing
Customer action Calls, messages or books from the ad Clicks to your website Calls, visits your site, or gets directions
Verification Google screening and verification Standard ad policies A verified Business Profile
What helps you show Bid, responsiveness, reviews, rating Bid and ad quality Relevance, distance, prominence
Badge Google Verified None None

On the free side, Google is clear: there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. For that work, see how to rank higher on Google Maps.

What decides where your Local Services Ad ranks?

Your Local Services Ad ranks based on your bid, your responsiveness and your reviews, along with the details of each search. Google's help page on ad rankings names these inputs:

  • Your bid, the most you are willing to pay for a lead
  • Your responsiveness to customer inquiries, where Google notes that missed calls may hurt it
  • Your rating, number of reviews and average response time
  • The search itself, including the time of the search and the customer's location

Reviews do double duty. They help your ad rank, and they help the customer pick you over the three businesses listed beside you. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews covers a routine that stays inside Google's rules.

Why answering fast matters with Local Services Ads

Answering fast matters because Local Services Ads charge for leads, rank you partly on responsiveness, and show customers several other businesses they can call in seconds. A slow answer costs you twice: once in the lead you may still pay for, and again in a weaker ranking.

Missed calls are common. Invoca's 2025 Call Conversion Benchmarks found only 61% of callers reach a live person, with answer rates running from 54% to 69% by industry. The same research found home services convert 46% of phone leads during the call itself. Speed matters for messages and form leads too: Harvard Business Review's research on online sales leads found firms that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify it.

That is where answering and follow-up systems earn their keep. Our speed-to-lead follow-up contacts new message and booking leads in under a minute, where the lead source allows a connection, and keeps following up until the customer books. For calls, an AI receptionist answers when your team cannot, says it is an AI assistant, and transfers to a real person on request.

Are Google Local Services Ads worth it?

Google Local Services Ads are worth testing for most eligible service businesses that can answer the phone quickly and already have solid reviews. They put you in front of customers who are ready to call, and you pay for contacts rather than clicks.

They are a weaker fit if calls regularly go to voicemail, if your reviews are thin compared with competitors, or if your category is not eligible in your state. Remember that a lead is a conversation, not a booked job. The ad brings the call. Your team, or your answering system, still has to turn it into work on the calendar.

Questions owners ask us

Do you pay for every call from a Local Services Ad?

No. Google's help page says calls count as leads when you answer or call back and speak with the customer, or when a missed call lasts more than 20 seconds. Leads Google judges invalid or low quality at first contact are not charged, and a follow-up from the same customer within 15 days is not charged again. Messages and booking requests can also count as leads.

What is the difference between Google Screened and Google Guaranteed?

Google Guaranteed was the badge shown on home service ads, such as plumbers and electricians, and it came with Google's Money Back Guarantee for eligible bookings. Google Screened was the badge for professional services, such as law firms and financial planners. In late 2025, Google replaced both with a single Google Verified badge and discontinued the Money Back Guarantee.

How long does it take to get approved for Local Services Ads?

Google's screening requirements page says the process takes 3 to 4 weeks on average after you submit your documents, and recommends starting as soon as you create your account. Delays usually come from missing paperwork, such as an expired license or insurance certificate, or a business name that does not match across documents and your Google Business Profile.

Are Local Services Ads the same as Google Maps rankings?

No. Local Services Ads are paid placements that show as ads, and you pay per lead. The regular Google Maps results are free, and Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking there. Many local businesses use both, with the same verified Google Business Profile and the same reviews supporting each one.

Can I get credit for a bad lead from a Local Services Ad?

Sometimes. Google's help page says charged leads are reassessed over time and may be credited automatically if they turn out to be low quality, and you can flag a poor lead through its feedback survey. Credits are not offered in every category. Google lists health care verticals and tax specialists among the exceptions, so check your own category.
