How Long Does SEO Take to Work?

By Hitesh Lamba · Updated

The short answer

For most local businesses, SEO shows early movement in 2 to 3 months and steadier gains over 4 to 12 months. Fixes to a Google Business Profile can show up sooner, while competitive cities and trades take longer. Google itself says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months.

  • Honest month-by-month expectations, with no promises of page one
  • Early signs SEO is working before the calls pick up
  • What to fix first while SEO builds

How long does SEO take to work?

For most local businesses, SEO shows early movement in 2 to 3 months and steadier gains over 4 to 12 months. Fixes to a Google Business Profile can show up sooner, while competitive cities and trades take longer. Google itself says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months.

That range is wide on purpose. Anyone who gives you a single number without seeing your market, your website and your reviews is guessing. The rest of this page explains why SEO takes time, what a realistic timeline looks like, and how to tell whether it is working before the phone starts ringing more.

Why does SEO take months instead of days?

SEO takes months because Google has to find your changes, re-evaluate your pages against everyone else's, and see your reputation grow, and each step runs on its own clock.

  • Google has to recrawl your pages. Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and repeated requests do not speed it up.
  • Google has to re-evaluate them. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in hours while others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change.
  • Reputation grows slowly. Google's local ranking guidance names reviews, ratings and links as part of prominence. You cannot earn a year of reviews in a week, and you should not try.
  • Your competitors are not standing still. If the top three roofers in your city are also working on SEO, you are chasing a moving target.

So SEO is less like flipping a switch and more like building a reputation in a new town. Steady work compounds.

What does a realistic SEO timeline look like?

A realistic local SEO timeline has three phases: fix the foundations, build relevance and reputation, then grow. The table shows what typically happens. It is a typical pattern, not a promise, and your market can move it faster or slower.

Timeframe What usually gets done What you can expect to see
First 30 days Audit, tracking set up, Business Profile and website fixes begin (most wrap up within 30 to 60 days) Cleaner data. Few ranking changes yet
Months 2 to 3 Service pages improved or added, citations cleaned up, review requests running Early movement: more impressions, some rankings improve
Months 4 to 6 More pages, local links, steady reviews More searches find you; calls from search start to climb
Months 6 to 12 Ongoing content, links, reviews and tuning Steadier gains across more searches and more of your service area
After 12 months Maintain and expand into new services or towns Compounding results, if the work continues

This matches how we set expectations at Larkpin. You can read the full process, including what happens in the first week and how we report, on how we work.

What makes SEO faster or slower?

Five things decide where in the range your business lands. Most of them you can see today.

Factor Faster when Slower when
Competition Small town, few businesses doing SEO Big city, crowded trade such as injury law or roofing
Starting point Verified profile, decent site, some reviews No profile, no website or a site Google cannot index
Reviews Steady new reviews already coming in Few reviews, or the newest is a year old
Website history Established domain with some links Brand new domain, or a past penalty
Speed of approvals Owner gives access and feedback quickly Changes wait weeks for sign-off

Reviews deserve a special mention. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 74% of consumers want reviews from the last 3 months, so a business with recent reviews is better placed with customers as well as with Google.

How can you tell if SEO is working before rankings move?

You can tell SEO is working by watching the numbers that move before calls do. These leading signs usually show up first:

  1. Impressions rise in Search Console. Your site is showing up for more searches, even if not yet at the top.
  2. New searches appear. The Queries tab in Search Console lists searches you were not showing for before.
  3. Business Profile views and searches grow. Your profile's performance report shows more people finding you.
  4. Target rankings improve. A search moves from position 25 to 12. It is not page one yet, but it is moving.
  5. Calls and form fills from search pick up. This is the one that pays the bills, and it usually comes last.

Our guide on how to check your Google rankings shows where to find each of these, and what an SEO report should include explains how they should be reported to you.

What should you watch out for?

Watch out for anyone who promises a ranking or a date. Google's own guide to hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google, and it tells business owners to be wary of SEOs who claim to guarantee rankings.

Other red flags: reports with lots of charts but no mention of calls, vague answers about what was done this month, and an agency that wants to own your Business Profile or website. For what good help actually looks like, see what an SEO company does.

What can you fix while SEO builds?

You can stop losing the leads you already get. SEO brings more people to your phone, but it cannot answer the phone. Invoca's 2025 call benchmarks found only 61% of callers reach a live person, so a business that misses calls is leaking leads before SEO even matters.

Fixes like missed-call text back and review requests usually go live within days to a couple of weeks. Running them while SEO builds means every new search visitor has a better chance of becoming a booked job. For example, an electrician who starts texting back missed callers in week one gets the benefit right away, months before rankings peak.

Questions owners ask us

Can SEO work in 30 days?

Some pieces can. Fixing a wrong Business Profile category, unhiding a site that was blocked from Google, or adding a missing service page can show movement within weeks. Real, lasting gains across your main searches almost never happen in 30 days. If someone promises page one in a month, Google's own hiring advice says to be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings.

Is local SEO faster than regular SEO?

Often, yes. Map pack results compete within a smaller area, and improvements to your Business Profile and reviews can show up within the first few months. National rankings for broad searches usually take longer because far more sites compete. That said, a local business in a crowded market, like a personal injury firm in a big city, can face a long climb too.

Why did my rankings drop right after changes were made?

Short dips after big changes are common. Google has to recrawl and re-evaluate the updated pages, and rankings can bounce for a few weeks while that happens. Google suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change. A drop that lasts more than a month, or follows a site migration, deserves a closer look in Search Console.

When should I decide SEO is not working?

Give it at least 4 to 6 months of consistent work before judging, but expect signs of progress earlier. By month 3 you should see more impressions in Search Console, more searches and views on your Business Profile, or better rankings for a few target searches. If none of those have moved and nobody can explain why in plain English, ask hard questions.

Does a brand new website take longer to rank?

Usually, yes. Google first has to find and crawl the site, which Google says can take from a few days to a few weeks. A new domain also has no links or history yet. A new site paired with a strong, verified Google Business Profile can still win map pack calls well before the website ranks on its own.
